What the West Can Learn from May Fourth – Crisis and Self-StrengtheningSpeakers: Maximilian Mayer & Frank Tsai
This talk will discuss the meaning and implications of the May 4th Movement. Through discussion of its legacy, we can better appreciate what it can teach us, in particular in regards to the crisis of identity and political institutions in Europe and the West generally. The point of this “Chinese Enlightenment” was not only to throw off tradition and learn from the West, but also strengthen the Chinese nation. We from the West can take inspiration from their call for action and radical rethinking of all assumptions, learn from our experiences in China (as they did abroad), and strengthen ourselves in our moment of disunity and crisis.
