Survey of Art in China – Session 6Speaker: Julie Chun
Understanding China’s Revolutionary Art
Please note that RSVP is essential due to limited spaces. Priority booking will be given to current RAS members. Exact meeting location will provided to those confirmed
We recognize the iconic images of China’s revolutionary art through propaganda posters and Socialist Realist style portraits, but what truly defines China’s revolutionary art? When did it begin? Who were the early artists? How was the form and content conceived? We continue the sixth session in the series Survey of Art in China where we meet each month at museums to gain a deeper understanding of artistic productions. Through a systematic discussion of Maoist era art, Julie Chun will provide the historical context for understanding how and why certain techniques, mediums, and stylistic elements came to be embraced as state-endorsed visual culture that has had profound resonance as official art, while conversely, coming under challenge by Chinese contemporary artists.
