We complete the final session of the series Survey of Art in China where we have been examining major genres of Chinese art in museums throughout Shanghai to better understand the historical context of their artistic production. This session will comprise of a concise sit-down lecture highlighting the socio-political conditions that paved the way for the emergence of contemporary art in China after Cultural Revolution. Julie Chun (MA, Art History) will provide a systematic format for explaining the art and the artists who arose to prominence. This lecture will also underscore some of the pivotal reasons why many of the now renowned Chinese artists are recognized globally and why their works of art command soaring prices in the art market.
