Photographic Portraiture in China

Speaker: Patrick Wack

We are pleased this month to invite the French photographer Patrick Wack as the special guest speaker to the Royal Asiatic Society Art Focus. The genre of portraiture has a long and rich history in both painting and photography, for it serves to capture not only the appearance of the subject but also the spiritual resonance of one’s being. Patrick Wack will take us through a photographic journey across China, sharing with us the visual narratives of the diverse individuals in this immense country. Revealed through his stylistic and documentary approaches, he will discuss his past and present projects to highlight the evolution of his vision and practice. The main body of work he will be discussing is his portraiture project that took him over a span of three years entitled “Here There Are Men.”

About the speaker:

After spending several years in the US and Sweden, Patrick Wack left a marketing job in Berlin to pursue his passion in photography that brought him to China. Since 2006 he has been working as a freelance photographer in the fields of portraiture, reportage and advertising. Patrick focuses on long-term personal projects and is active in the field of reportage as part of the German agency LAIF. He has published in The Sunday Times, National Geo, The Monocle, Vogue and many others. In 2014 he was the recipient of the first Prize at the International Kuala Lumpur Portrait festival and in 2015 he held several solo exhibitions in Shanghai, Berlin, Singapore and Paris.
