China’s Hidden Children – A Visit to Shanghai Healing Home Orphanage

Convener: Knut K. Wimberger

Please RSVP by Thursday, November 30 – Limited to 20 participants on first come first serve basis. Meeting point details provided on confirmation of RSVP.

This field trip follows up our exploration of the ongoing social costs and consequences of China’s One Child Policy which included the November 2017 Book Club discussion of Professor Kay Ann Johnson’s 2016 book China’s Hidden Children and our April 2017 Current Conversation on China’s Demographic Puzzle.

Shanghai Healing Home (SHH) is a non-profit foster home assisting the local Chinese Children‘s Welfare Institutes by providing pre- and post-surgical care to Chinese orphan babies born with surgically correctable deformities. SHH provides a home-like environment that meets babies’ physical, emotional and developmental needs.

We will travel by bus from meeting point near People’s Square to SHH in rural Pudong, where the director of volunteers, Ms. Jess Gfeller, will talk with us and take us on a guided tour of the orphanage. We will return to the pick-up location by noon for a no-host social lunch in a close by restaurant.
