While based in China, many expats travel to South Korea. It is indeed a compelling country filled with political strife with North Korea, Gangnam-style K-pop, cosmetic glamour and spice-laden kimchi and bibimbop dishes. Seoul is also a powerhouse for art and rich cultural heritage.
Julie Chun (MA, Art History) will provide a succinct overview of the rise of Korean contemporary art, which emerged in the turbulent era of president Park Chung-hee (father of the current female president Park Geun-hye). Julie will discuss the pivotal artists and their contributions to both Korean and American artistic culture. Through this lecture, it is hoped that you will gain a better understanding of the history, artistic culture, and the society that has shaped contemporary South Korea.
