The Power Station of Art is the first state-instituted contemporary art museum in Shanghai.  It opened on October 1, 2012 as the main venue for the 9th Shanghai Biennale, a global event that has been taking place every two years since 1996.
According to the organizers, “the biennale explores an interlocking set of questions: What is the relationship between the social and the fictive in the construction and re-construction of society? Has the production of the social entered a new phase with the massive influx of “sociometric” technologies, the extraction of data and digital profiling, and the increasing automatisation of social processes in algorithms?”
Yes, but what does this mean and how do the art works support and answer (do they?) these grand questions and claim? Our lecturer, Julie Chun (MA, Art History), has been covering the Shanghai Biennale since 2012.  She will provide a comprehensible entry into the complex world of global contemporary art as we navigate the cavernous halls of the Power Station of Art to better understand the direct and subtle messages that artists and curators are trying to convey to us.
